I just realized that many people in crypto really don't understand what PNL is. Yet, it's the foundation for tracking your gains or losses.

So here it is, PNL is simply the difference between what you bought and what you sold. It's your financial thermometer for each trade. Positive = you made a profit, negative = you lost. End of story.

The formula is super simple: Sale price minus purchase price, multiplied by the quantity, minus platform fees. That's it. No need to complicate things.

Let's take a concrete example. You buy 0.1 BTC at $40,000, spending $4,000. Then you sell it at $42,000, getting back $4,200. Before fees, that's a +$200 profit. After exchange commissions, you end up with about +$198 PNL. That's your actual gain.

Now, there's an important distinction: unrealized PNL is when your position is still open, you see the gains or losses on paper but haven't closed the trade. Realized PNL is once you've sold, then it's concrete.

You also need to understand that PNL can be volatile. When prices move quickly, your profit or loss changes rapidly. That's why many traders panic when they see their PNL in the red for a few hours.

To give you an idea with current numbers, look at SOL which is around $84.54 right now with a 1.15% gain over 24h, BNB at $621.50 (+1.03%), and TON at $1.36 (+2.35%). If you had bought any of these tokens yesterday and sell now, you'd calculate your PNL based on these movements.

The important thing is not to confuse PNL and ROI. ROI is the percentage of profitability, PNL is the actual amount in dollars. Both tell you different things about your performance.

Basically, mastering your PNL means understanding exactly how much you're making or losing on each transaction. It's the foundation of portfolio management in crypto finance. Without it, you're trading blindly.
