Three Major Types of on-chain Users: A Deep Analysis of Characteristic Differences

On-chain User Classification and Feature Analysis

On-chain users can be roughly divided into three categories: airdrop participants, DeFi enthusiasts, and speculative traders.

Airdrop participants mainly focus on the token airdrop activities of various Web3 projects, hoping to obtain token rewards at a low cost or even at no cost. This type of user usually seeks short-term gains.

DeFi enthusiasts are keen on the decentralized finance sector, where they earn returns by providing liquidity, staking assets, participating in lending and arbitrage, often seeking relatively stable long-term returns.

Speculative traders mainly focus on high-risk assets such as meme coins, expecting to achieve quick profits by seizing market hotspots.

These three user groups exhibit distinctly different characteristics. We can compare and analyze them from five dimensions: technical ability, risk preference, time investment, community participation, and expected returns. The rating scale is from 1 to 5, with 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest.

The analysis results are as follows:

The characteristics of airdrop participants show a tendency towards time investment. They are at an intermediate level in terms of technical ability and community engagement, with relatively low risk appetite and return expectations, forming an overall relatively balanced but inward-leaning pentagonal pattern.

DeFi enthusiasts stand out in terms of technical ability and risk preference, with high return expectations, but relatively low community engagement and time investment. Their characteristic graph shows an outward expansion with a narrowing bottom.

The characteristic profile of meme coin speculative traders strongly leans towards risk preference, return expectations, and community participation, but their technical abilities are relatively low, overall presenting an outward-expanding form.

Users can choose the suitable participation method according to their own situation:

If you have ample time, limited funds, and a lower risk tolerance, you might consider becoming an airdrop participant.

If you have a strong technical background, enjoy in-depth research, and have a certain financial foundation, you can choose to become a DeFi enthusiast.

If you prefer high-risk, high-reward investment methods and can accept the possibility of significant losses, then trading meme coins may be more suitable for you.

The following is a detailed analysis of the characteristics of three types of users:

  1. Airdrop Participants

Technical skills (3/5): Basic blockchain operational skills are required, such as using wallets and interacting with testnets, but there is no need for a deep understanding of smart contracts or complex DeFi mechanisms.

Risk Preference (2/5): The risk is relatively low, mainly investing time and a small amount of gas fees, and even if it fails, it will not result in significant losses.

Time Investment (4/5): It requires a significant amount of time to research new projects and complete various tasks (such as participating in social media activities, testing product features) to ensure that no potential airdrop opportunities are missed.

Community Engagement (3/5): Active on various social platforms, but the motivation for participation is mainly to complete tasks rather than to deeply integrate into the community culture.

Expected Returns (3/5): Hope to gain considerable returns through airdrops, but due to the varying quality of projects, the actual returns have a high level of uncertainty.

  1. DeFi Enthusiasts

Technical capabilities (4/5): Need to understand complex DeFi protocols, liquidity pool mechanisms, and risk management strategies, such as impermanent loss and other concepts.

Risk appetite (4/5): Willing to take on higher risks, including smart contract vulnerabilities and market fluctuations, but generally adopts strategies such as diversification to mitigate potential losses.

Time investment (3/5): It is necessary to regularly monitor market dynamics and adjust strategies, but the frequency of operations is not as high as that of airdrop participants.

Community Participation (2/5): More focused on personal gains rather than community activities, with relatively low participation unless it involves important governance votes.

Expected Returns (4/5): Pursuing stable and relatively high annualized returns, usually between 10%-100%, and not very interested in short-term windfall profits.

  1. Speculative Traders

Technical capability (2/5): The operation is relatively simple, requiring only a basic understanding of wallet usage and trading knowledge, without the need to delve into technical details.

Risk Appetite (5/5): Extremely high risk tolerance, willing to participate in high-risk projects, pursuing the dream of "hundredfold coins."

Time investment (4/5): Mainly relies on market sentiment and hot trends, requiring frequent attention to market conditions and community dynamics, with a significant time investment.

Community Participation (5/5): Highly active on various social platforms and communities, driving price increases through active participation in discussions and dissemination.

Expected Returns (5/5): Anticipating ultra-high returns, such as a hundredfold or even thousandfold increase, but with a very low probability of success, leaning more towards a speculative mindset.

Summary

Each participation method has its characteristics, and the key is to find the track that suits you best. Taking my personal experience as an example, I started as an airdrop participant, earning returns while experiencing products and learning about projects; then I shifted to the DeFi sector, gaining a deeper understanding of protocols and on-chain operations, earning returns through various methods; and ultimately became an on-chain trader, tracking popular trends and seeking market opportunities.

Although identity and positioning have changed multiple times, I have always maintained an attitude of learning new knowledge and breaking my own limitations, striving to keep up with the rapid development of the industry. Once I find the track that suits me, I must move forward with determination.

Please take your seat: What type of on-chain player do you belong to? Which type of player are you suitable to become?
