๐What is a Fuel Injector Spray Pattern?
A spray pattern is the shape and angle at which fuel is sprayed from the injector nozzle into the combustion chamber or intake port. The goal is to atomize the fuel โ breaking it into fine droplets โ to mix evenly with air for clean, powerful combustion.
๐ Types of Fuel Injector Spray Patterns
1. Single Hole / Jet Spray
โข ๐จ Narrow, focused stream.
โข โ Common in older engines.
โข โ Less effective atomization.
2. Multi-Hole Spray (2, 4, 6, or more)
โข ๐ฆ Multiple small jets spray in a cone or fan shape.
โข โ Better atomization, precise distribution.
โข ๐ Common in modern fuel-injected engines.
3. Cone-Shaped Spray
โข ๐บ Uniform circular spray cone.
โข โ Great for central injection into intake manifolds.
โข Ensures even air-fuel mixture.
4. Fan Spray
โข ๐ฌ๏ธ Wide flat pattern.
โข โ Best for engines with wide intake ports.
โข Promotes better coverage of the intake valve.
5. Dual Cone Spray
โข โธ๏ธ Two opposing spray cones.
โข โ Enhanced atomization and better cold-start performance.
6. Wall-Guided or Spray-Guided
โข Designed to interact with intake port walls or directly aim at spark plug area (common in GDI engines).
โข โ High-efficiency combustion, lower emissions.
๐ฏ Why Spray Pattern Matters
โข โ Better Atomization = More complete combustion.
โข โ Less Fuel Wasted = Improved fuel economy.
โข โ Lower Emissions = Cleaner engine.
โข โ Smooth Idle and Throttle Response
โ๏ธ Controlled by:
โข Injector design (nozzle holes, angle, pressure)
โข ECU programming (timing and duration of injection)
