Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently shared his concerns about the newly launched Worldcoin human identity verification sys-tem in a blog post. He examined the mechanics of Sam Altman project, Worldcoin, and its broader concepts, particularly the proof-of-humanity approach.
Worldcoin, along with other identity solutions like Proof of Humanity, BrightID, Idenam, and Circles, believes that advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) will blur the lines between humans and machines, making it challenging to distinguish between them.
Worldcoin solution is a unique digital passport that enables users to prove their human identity and avoid being mistaken for bots. This is accomplished through the use of Orbs, machines that scan a person's eyeball to create a World ID.
While acknowledging the value of such a proof-of-personhood sys-tem in addressing anti-spam and anti-concentration-of-power issues, Buterin also highlighted the significant risks it poses. He warned that if proof of personhood is not adequately addressed, decentralized governance could be susceptible to capture by wealthy actors, including hostile governments.
Buterin raised his first concern regarding privacy and the potential for capturing more data than necessary during the iris scanning process. He worried that this could include sensitive information like a person sex, ethnicity, and even certain medical conditions.
He also expressed doubts about the accessibility and centralization within the Worldcoin Foundation and questioned the security aspects of the sytem. Worldcoin had achieved significant user adoption, with 1,500 Orbs accessible in 35 global cities, and an estimated two million people signing up for a World ID. However, Buterin remained skeptical about the scalability of such a distributed manufacturing approach, stating that ensuring an Orb within five kilometers of everyone would be challenging.
In conclusion, Buterin acknowledged that a world without proof-of-personhood also poses its own set of risks and potential dangers. Building a resilient sys-tem that addresses these concerns would be a complex and time-consuming task, likely requiring several years to find an effective formula. He expressed admiration for those undertaking this task but recognized the challenges ahead.
