Putin and Chinese President Xi Cement Alliance That Alarms Washington and Tokyo

After centuries of mistrust, Russia and China now appear more like allies than rivals. Decades of energy deals, dozens of meetings, and one brutal war have forged a partnership that worries the West more than ever.

From Handshake to Brotherhood The first steps trace back to the US invasion of Iraq in 2003 and the 2008 financial crisis, moments that both leaders saw as signs of American overreach. But the real turning point came in 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea. Western sanctions pushed Moscow closer to Beijing, which quickly filled the economic gap by buying Russian oil, gas, and weapons. While Western companies fled Russia, China kept buying oil and selling components. NATO accused Beijing of being a “decisive enabler” of the war. Beijing denied supplying arms, but US officials insisted Chinese support extended Russia’s ability to keep fighting.

A New Axis with India Putin and Chinese President Xi seized on tensions between Washington and New Delhi at the latest Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit. Trump’s tariffs on Indian oil imports provided the opening. Cameras captured the smiling trio – Putin, Xi, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi – signaling that the balance of influence is shifting.
