Analysis of the Development Path of Decentralization Platform

Decentralization games have always been a hot topic in the crypto market. Recently, the gaming platform Magic on Arbitrum has exploded in popularity, sparking widespread discussion in the market. Some have compared it to the "Nintendo of the crypto world," while its counterpart is Gala games, known as the "Web3 version of Steam." These two completely different models raise the question: What development path is suitable for decentralized gaming platforms?

Self-developed premium or distributed games? Analyzing the development path of decentralized platforms

Development of Traditional Gaming Platforms

The traditional gaming industry platforms mainly have three models: studio model, development engine model, and distribution platform model.

The studio model starts from a single game studio and gradually develops into a large company with multiple IPs. A representative example is Blizzard, which started with "Warcraft" and successively launched well-known IPs such as "World of Warcraft" and "StarCraft."

The development engine model, taking Roblox as a typical example, provides an ecosystem for creating and sharing games, including development tools, virtual currency, and commercialization features. Roblox generated $2.96 billion in revenue in 2020, an 82% year-on-year increase, demonstrating strong growth potential.

The distribution platform model is represented by Steam, starting from its own games like DOTA2 and CSGO(, and developing into a mainstream game distribution platform. Steam provides developers with distribution channels and offers players a convenient way to purchase and manage games.

Development Path of Blockchain Gaming Platforms

) Game Studio Mode and Public Chain Ecosystem

In the crypto world, this path has evolved to first create blockbuster games and then issue public chains. For example, the Cryptokitties team launched the Flow public chain, and Axie Infinity issued Ronin. New projects like Fusionist are also following this approach by launching the Endurance mainnet and planning to release multiple games.

This model relies on the influence of a single game, requiring the initial product to ignite the market. However, if the game struggles to launch, the value of the public chain will also decline. Transitioning from a single game to a public chain may also become a "shackle", increasing security risks.

) Development Engine Mode

Blockchain game development engines like Fragnova and Cocos-CBX provide more freedom and creativity. Decentralization development engines can better protect game data and user assets, giving developers more autonomy.

However, traditional engines like UE and Unity have dominated the market, providing more comprehensive tools and support. The Decentralization platform still needs improvement in technology and ecology.

) distribution platform model

This is a choice among many decentralized platforms. TreasureDAO started from the Loot ecosystem and has developed into the largest platform on Arbitrum. Gala Games incentivizes the community and governance through tokens, listing more quality games.

Decentralization platforms can generate profit through token rewards, NFT trading, and other means, using smart contracts to protect user rights. However, the quantity and quality of games currently still lag behind traditional platforms.

Development Space

Decentralization gaming platforms still have huge growth potential. The future development of vertical public chains and dedicated Appchains is worth looking forward to. The urgent task for development engines and distribution platforms is to attract more developers to achieve victory in numbers.

Key challenges include:

  • How to better utilize blockchain technology to protect user rights
  • How to attract more players and developers to join
  • How to compete with traditional platforms in popular games

Decentralization platforms have the potential to disrupt centralized platforms, returning more rights to users and developers. In the coming years, decentralized gaming platforms need to continue innovating and developing in order to succeed in intense competition.

Magic is indeed quite powerful, but the gas is high.

actually... the entire "decentralized gaming" narrative lacks mathematical rigor in proving true ownership. where's the ZK-based verification layer?
