Elon Musk 'Hands-On' Funds the Republican Party
One year after the noisy rift with President Donald Trump, Musk publicly criticized the Republican Party as a “corrupt” force that is “pushing the United States toward bankruptcy.” However, after months of almost staying out of the political mainstream, this outspoken tech billionaire now signals that he will continue to pour enormous funds to support GOP and Independent candidates, reports say.
“America will fall apart if the far-left wins. They will throw open the doors to illegal immigration and fraud. Then, America will no longer be America,” Musk wrote on social media X. Musk’s post echoes and seemingly confirms a statement from an influential figure in the conservative circle, who claims Musk is “all-in” on funding the Republican Party this year. This move also aligns with information from December. According to reports, Musk had started writing “big checks” to Republican lawmakers after a reconciliation dinner with Vice President J.D. Vance. The new developments show a significant reversal from his commitment in July last year, when Musk announced he would spend billions of dollars to build the “America Party” — a new political force aimed at breaking what he called the bipartisan consensus on borrowing and public spending. “In terms of bankrupting the country through waste and corruption, we are living in a one-party system, not a democracy,” Musk once stated. “Today, the American Party is born to restore your freedom.” However, this plan quickly hit a dead end as Musk — known for bold promises but often late — faced practical, complex, and less glamorous challenges in building a political party from scratch. By August, The Wall Street Journal reported that Vice President Vance had convinced Musk to abandon the idea of forming a third party, leading him to cancel a scheduled call with political strategists. Meanwhile, The Washington Post reported that Vance had secretly been working behind the scenes for months to mend the relationship between Trump and Musk, though this “ceasefire” remains fragile.
Currently holding an estimated net worth of around $726 billion, Musk has previously spent over $290 million supporting Trump’s campaign and other Republican candidates in the 2024 election. However, the relationship between these two powerful figures seriously deteriorated in June last year after Musk accused Trump of hiding his connections to Jeffrey Epstein, to which Trump responded with threats to cancel all government contracts for Musk’s companies. By September, the two unexpectedly spoke and shook hands at a large memorial event for Charlie Kirk, although Trump quickly downplayed the significance of the moment. Two months later, Trump was again seen friendly, patting Musk on the back at a dinner honoring Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
