Telegram founder clarifies: $1.7 billion in latest bond financing is completely independent and unrelated to Russian capital
[Chain Wen] Telegram founder Pavel Durov recently posted a statement in response to some recent questions. He clearly pointed out that, from a capital structure perspective, Telegram has no connection to Russia. Most importantly — the $1.7 billion bond financing just completed did not involve any Russian investors.
Regarding the bonds issued earlier in 2021, Durov stated that they have been mostly repaid and there are no issues. He emphasized a commonly confused point: bondholders and shareholders are two different concepts. Currently, the only shareholder of Telegram remains himself.
It is worth noting that there were reports earlier claiming that Telegram’s $500 million bonds in Russia were frozen due to Western sanctions. Durov’s recent statement essentially clarifies Telegram’s independence in platform financing and the stability of its core equity structure. This is a key clarification for the Web3 community and users who rely on the Telegram ecosystem.
