Energy conflict between Slovakia and Ukraine enters a new phase after Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico issued serious threats regarding electricity supplies. According to a report from RTHK, if Ukraine does not resume oil shipments on Monday, Fico will order Slovak companies to halt emergency electricity supplies to its neighbor. This tension reflects an escalating economic dispute between the two countries.

Robert Fico’s Ultimatum and Slovakia’s Economic Impact

Slovak Prime Minister expressed his concerns via social media, detailing how Slovakia has been harmed by a series of Ukrainian actions. Kyiv’s suspension of natural gas supplies has caused Slovakia an annual loss of 500 million euros. Now, the halt in oil shipments worsens the country’s economic situation. Fico views Ukraine’s actions as systematic efforts to exert significant economic pressure on Bratislava.

Historical Dependence: Friendship Pipeline and European Energy Routes

To understand the complexity of this crisis, it is important to consider the historical context of energy routes. Russia has transported crude oil to Central and Eastern Europe via a strategic pipeline called the ‘Druzhba’ (Friendship Pipeline). This southern route passes through Ukraine before reaching the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary—making these three countries highly dependent on energy flows through Ukraine. This system has been the backbone of energy supply for the industrialization of Central Europe for decades.

Turning Point: Ukraine’s Blockade Since September 2024

Since September 27 last year, Russian oil shipments through the Ukrainian pipeline segment have been completely halted, creating an energy vacuum that disrupts the entire region. Ukraine’s decision has sparked strong dissatisfaction from Hungary and Slovakia, which directly blame Kyiv for the supply crisis. Fico even claims that Ukraine deliberately delayed reopening the pipeline as a pressure tactic to force Hungary to abandon opposition to Ukraine’s accession to the European Union—leading to the conclusion that energy is being used as a tool of regional diplomacy.

This dynamic reveals that the European energy crisis is not just an infrastructure issue but a complex geopolitical struggle involving Ukraine, Russia, the European Union, and each country’s national interests in the region.
