HBAR's OBV Breakdown: Why Volume Weakness Could Derail Recovery Despite Bullish Money Flow

Hedera (HBAR) entered March 2026 trading around $0.10, still nursing wounds from the sharp correction that began in mid-January. From its November 2025 highs, the token has surrendered over 40% in value. Yet beneath the surface, conflicting signals from technical indicators paint an intriguing picture: while money flow metrics suggest accumulation continues, volume indicators—particularly On-Balance Volume (OBV)—reveal a concerning breakdown that could determine whether any rebound takes root or fades away.

The tension between these signals matters immensely. Capital continues flowing into HBAR at lower prices, suggesting conviction among smart money. But without volume to validate those flows, rallies may struggle to gain traction. Understanding this OBV breakdown is critical for anyone analyzing HBAR’s near-term direction.

Capital Still Flowing In: The Money Flow Story

Despite the 35% decline since mid-January, evidence of accumulation persists. The Chaikin Money Flow (CMF) indicator has painted a striking picture: between late December and early February, while HBAR’s price trended lower, CMF trended higher. This divergence signals that institutional or accumulation-minded traders continued buying as retail capitulation intensified.

The Money Flow Index (MFI) tells a similar story. Since late November, as prices declined, MFI climbed steadily—until recently curling upward again. It now sits near 41, just shy of the 54 level that would confirm a stronger bullish divergence. Both metrics suggest dip buyers remain active, and capital has not fully evacuated the market.

This persistence of money flow at lower prices would normally be bullish. Yet there’s a critical caveat: volume trends are telling a different narrative.

OBV Breakdown Exposes the Volume Problem

On-Balance Volume tracks whether transaction volume supports price direction. Rising OBV confirms buying strength; falling OBV signals distribution or weakness. For HBAR, the picture has been deteriorating.

In late January, OBV broke decisively below a key descending trendline—a break that marks a transition from weakening to outright failure of volume support. This happened precisely as the CMF/MFI divergences were suggesting accumulation. The contradiction is stark: money flow indicators said buyers were stepping in, but volume metrics said those buyers weren’t bringing enough ammunition.

This OBV breakdown carries immediate implications. It explains why every attempted rally since October has faced resistance and why price advances have repeatedly fizzled. More critically, it indicates that even at current levels near $0.10, the market lacks the volume conviction needed to sustain upside momentum.

The Three-Month Outflow Streak Ended—But at the Worst Time

Spot flow data reinforces the OBV story. From late October through early February, HBAR experienced nearly three months of consistent weekly net outflows. More tokens left exchanges than entered them, which at face value suggests accumulation by long-term holders.

However, only recently did this pattern break. On February 2, HBAR recorded its first meaningful week of net inflows since October—around $749,000. On the surface, this looks constructive. But the timing coincided precisely with the OBV breakdown beneath the descending trendline.

This shift from outflows to inflows, combined with OBV weakness, suggests a transition from quiet accumulation to potential distribution. Buying pressure may be waning, and supply could be reaching sellers rather than being absorbed by patient accumulators.

Critical Support and Resistance: Where the Decision Point Lies

With mixed signals across indicators, price levels now carry outsized importance in determining HBAR’s trajectory in the weeks ahead.

Downside Risk: The first critical support sits at $0.076. If HBAR holds above this level and both CMF and MFI continue improving, bounce attempts can persist. A clean break below $0.076, however, would signal sellers regaining dominance—something the OBV breakdown is already hinting at. Below this support, targets open near $0.062 and $0.043.

Upside Potential: On the upside, reclaiming $0.090 would mark the first hurdle. This level has capped rallies repeatedly since January and represents short-term resistance. Breaking above it would signal early confidence returning. A sustained move above $0.107—the major resistance zone—would confirm a breakout from the falling wedge pattern that has defined HBAR’s structure since October. Such a breakout would activate the wedge’s measured target, pointing to approximately 52% potential upside.

The OBV Condition: What Must Change

For any serious rebound to take hold, OBV must reverse its deterioration. The indicator needs to not only stabilize above its descending trendline but convincingly trend upward. Without this validation, price advances will likely face constant selling pressure as volume remains insufficient to support them.

Currently, all the elements for recovery exist in theory: a consolidating falling wedge, bullish money flow divergences, and accumulation at lower prices. Yet the OBV breakdown remains the wildcard. If volume support returns while prices approach the $0.090-$0.107 resistance zone, the probability of a sustained breakout increases substantially. If OBV remains weak, even a move above $0.090 risks becoming another false start.

March 2026 will likely prove decisive. The interplay between money flow signals and OBV trends will ultimately determine whether HBAR rebounds toward $0.107 and beyond, or whether weakness persists and forces prices back toward $0.076 and lower support levels.
