PUA (Pick-up Artist, originally meaning "Pick-up Artist") has evolved in the contemporary context into a systematic means of emotional manipulation and psychological control, especially evident in intimate relationships. According to authoritative public sources, its classic routines can be summarized as follows:
1. The Five Classic Traps of PUA (Five-Step Trap Method)
This model is repeatedly cited by multiple authoritative sources and is the core framework for identifying PUA behavior:
1⃣️ Curiosity Trap
Create attention by portraying a "high-value persona," such as pretending to be a "playboy," "emperor," or "poet."
Use tactics like stepping back to advance, creating suspense, and other speech patterns to generate a sense of pressure and test obedience.
2⃣️ Seeking Trap (Sympathy Trap)
Show vulnerability, such as fabricating tragic experiences (loss of loved ones, ex-partner's terminal illness, etc.) to evoke sympathy.
Imply that the other person is "one of a kind" to establish an emotional connection.
3⃣️ Falling into the Trap (Infatuation Trap)
Avoid directly confessing feelings; instead, induce the other person to express love or make commitments, using this as a basis for emotional binding.
Require the other person to give conditions (money, body, time, etc.) as "rewards."
4⃣️ Self-esteem Destruction Trap
Magnify the other person's mistakes or shortcomings to create guilt and self-doubt.
Long-term denial of the other person's value causes them to gradually lose confidence and become dependent on the manipulator's evaluation.
5⃣️ Emotional Abuse Trap
After extreme dependence is established, use verbal insults, economic control, social isolation, and even threats of self-harm/suicide to dehumanize the other as a "puppet."
The goal is to completely control the other's life, emotions, and decisions.
2. Other Common Psychological Manipulation Tactics
In addition to the five steps above, PUA also widely employs the following strategies:
Hot and Cold (Intermittent Reinforcement): Alternating between enthusiastic gift-giving and cold silence to create emotional addiction.
Gaslighting: Denying facts ("You remember wrong," "You're too sensitive") to make the other doubt their judgment.
Foot-in-the-Door Effect: Starting with small requests (borrowing 50 yuan) and gradually escalating to larger demands (borrowing 50,000 yuan), eroding boundaries.
Social Isolation: Demeaning friends and family ("They don't understand you") to cut off external support systems.
Fake Persona Packaging: Posting luxury cars and watches on social media, but actually renting or stealing images, which cannot withstand detailed questioning.
3. Legal and Social Warnings
Mu Linhan Case (2023 verdict) was listed by the Supreme People's Court as the "First PUA Case," recognizing long-term psychological abuse as constituting abuse.
China's "Cybersecurity Law" and other regulations have begun to regulate psychological control behaviors in cyberspace.
If you encounter PUA involving fraud, extortion, privacy leaks, etc., responsibility can be pursued according to criminal law.
💡 Reminder: Healthy relationships should be based on respect, equality, and sincerity. If a relationship causes you to constantly doubt yourself, feel isolated, or suffer financial loss, seek help from friends, family, or professional organizations promptly.
