Iran has launched ballistic missiles into a NATO member country—twice. On March 4th, a ballistic missile launched from Iran flew over Iraq’s airspace, then over Syria, and headed straight for Turkey. Hegseth says there’s “no reason” to invoke Article 5. But Turkey also has Article 4, which allows for urgent consultations if a member’s security is threatened. They have used this clause before. Turkey has the second-largest military in NATO, with 500,000 active troops. It shares a direct border with Iran.
