Vitalik Questions the Effectiveness of Creator Coins in the Current Ecosystem
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin shared his critique of the modern approach to content creation and promotion through tokenized systems. According to the well-known developer, current mechanisms do not address the industry’s main problem — filtering quality content amid the growing flow of information.
Why content quality remains an unresolved issue
Vitalik points out that simply incentivizing content creation is not enough to develop a healthy ecosystem. The main challenge is not to encourage authors to produce more material, but to identify and highlight truly valuable content. Existing creator coins often function as speculative tools, distracting from solving this fundamental problem.
Inspiration from Substack and DAO approaches
Buterin suggests looking at the model used by the Substack platform, which combines curatorial and practical approaches to support authors. At the same time, he advocates for creating small, non-tokenized decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) to select the most promising content creators. Such a mechanism would allow for more effective early-stage selection of quality authors.
Creator coins as prediction tools rather than speculation
Ethereum co-founder proposes shifting the use of creator coins — mainly to serve as prediction markets, giving participants the ability to assess the potential of authors rather than viewing them as financial instruments for profit. According to Vitalik, this approach could transform the entire industry toward greater functionality and usefulness.
