US farms are disappearing at a very fast rate

The number of farms in the US fell by 15,000 in 2025, going down to 1.87 million.
This is the lowest number of farms since the 1850s.

This is the third year in a row that farms declined, and the sixth drop in the last 7 years.

During this time, the total number of farms went down by 158,200, which is about 8 percent lower.

At the same time, total farmland also decreased by 24.9 million acres, falling to 874 million acres.
This is the lowest farmland level since the 1910s.

Meanwhile, farm bankruptcies jumped 36 percent compared to last year, reaching 293 cases in the first 9 months of 2025.
