# A Digital Nomad's Haven: Why Huizhou Captured My Heart

Over the past few years, as a digital nomad, I've traveled to countless places and witnessed too many neon lights and office cubicles. I've come to realize that deep down, I'm drawn to that sense of freedom found in rural tranquility. If I had to choose one place as my heart's greatest desire among all these mountains and rivers, it would undoubtedly be Huizhou—where the saying goes: "A lifetime of obsession lies here; no dream reaches Huizhou."

Huizhou is nestled in the mountains of southern Anhui Province with distinct four seasons. Spring brings vast fields of canola flowers blanketing the hillsides. Summer offers creek streams in the mountains perfect for wading. Autumn features the famous Tachuan autumn foliage. Winter invites you to Mount Huang to witness sea clouds and rime frost, or to soak in natural hot springs. Compared to the chaos of cities, this place offers mountains from your window and water at your doorstep. The ancient villages with white walls and black tiles are quiet and serene. Transportation is also convenient—high-speed rail reaches Hangzhou in approximately 1.5 hours and Shanghai in over 2 hours, so you can switch back to urban pace whenever you want.

Moreover, the cost of living here is incredibly affordable. The budget that only gets you a single room rental in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, or Shenzhen can secure an entire traditional dwelling with a courtyard in Huizhou. As for cuisine, there's no need to elaborate—Hui cuisine, one of China's eight great culinary traditions, features dishes like stinky mandarin fish, hairy tofu, and bamboo shoots with braised pork. These are fresh, flavorful delicacies made with ingredients picked fresh from the mountains, full of authentic charm. This is precisely why I eat an extra bowl of rice every time I visit!

Most importantly, despite looking like a paradise untouched by the outside world, this place is far from isolated. Thanks to China's well-developed infrastructure, broadband and 5G coverage are essentially universal here. Coffee shops, guesthouses, and bookshops are gradually emerging, making it easy to find a quiet corner with your laptop and work the entire day undisturbed.

For digital nomads, the essence of changing work locations is seeking a more comfortable state of existence. Huizhou's slow-paced lifestyle—with its harmonious blend of mountains and water, and its balance between retreat and engagement—is precisely that most concrete answer.
