Gate News, March 24 - Iran has issued a letter to member states of the International Maritime Organization, stating that "non-hostile vessels" may transit the Strait of Hormuz after being "coordinated with Iranian authorities". In the letter to International Maritime Organization members on Tuesday, Iran's Foreign Ministry stated that Iran has "taken necessary and appropriate measures to prevent invaders and their supporters from exploiting the Strait of Hormuz to promote hostile actions against Iran". Currently, approximately 3,200 vessels are stuck in the Persian Gulf, and since the conflict erupted, at least 22 vessels have been attacked by Iran. Last week, the International Maritime Organization held an emergency meeting with member states, negotiating to establish a humanitarian corridor allowing vessels with severe supply shortages to leave the Persian Gulf. Recent vessel tracking data shows Iran is allowing a small number of ships to transit through a route within its territorial waters, with analysts believing this route helps Iranian authorities verify vessel identities before permitting transit.
