On April 1, 2026, at 16:00 UTC, the total assets of Drift Protocol's treasury were $309 million. One hour later, only $41 million remained. This is not an April Fools' joke — the Drift team was forced to clarify on X platform that “this is not an April Fools' joke.” The attacker drained approximately $285 million worth of crypto assets from the protocol, making it the largest DeFi security breach of 2026 so far, and the most severe security incident in the Solana ecosystem since the $325 million Wormhole bridge hack in 2022.

This was neither a flash loan attack nor an exploit of smart contract code. The attacker used a previously rarely discussed attack vector in public literature — a durable nonce.
