So I was eating an orange yesterday and my dog was staring at me like I was being cruel keeping it all to myself. Got me wondering—can dogs eat oranges? Turns out they actually can, which surprised me a bit.
Did some digging and apparently oranges are packed with stuff dogs need too. We're talking vitamin C, fiber, calcium, potassium, all that good stuff. But here's the thing—your dog probably already gets most of that from regular dog food, so it's more of a fun occasional treat than something you need to make a habit of.
The catch is you can't just hand them a whole orange. You gotta peel it, get rid of the seeds (apparently there's cyanide in there which is wild), and only give them like one to three small slices max. Too much and they'll get an upset stomach or worse. And if your dog has diabetes, skip it entirely because of the sugar content.
For puppies, same rules but even more careful—their digestive systems are more sensitive. If they're still nursing, definitely don't bother yet.
So yeah, can dogs eat oranges? Yes, but keep it minimal. Honestly it's more about having something different to give them on a hot day since oranges are like 90% water. Just make sure you check with your vet first, especially if your dog has any existing health stuff going on. Better safe than dealing with a sick pup, you know?
