The Story of the World's Most Expensive Pizza: The Bitcoin Transaction That Made History
May 22, 2010. A day that changed everything in crypto history. They call it "Bitcoin Pizza Day" now.
The Beginning
Laszlo Hanyecz was just a programmer in Florida. Early Bitcoin guy. Back then, Bitcoin was basically nothing—worth about $0.003. Most people thought it was just some tech experiment. Worthless, really.
The Historic Transaction
Laszlo wanted to do something real with his digital coins. So he posted this on BitcoinTalk:
"I would like to pay 10,000 Bitcoin for two large pizzas. If you are interested, please contact me."
Someone bit. Two days later, Papa John's pizzas showed up at Laszlo's door. The deal was done.
The Incredible Value Evolution
Those 10,000 bitcoins? Worth maybe $30 back in 2010.
By 2017, that same amount skyrocketed to something like $200 million.
And now? It's kind of mind-blowing. Today (September 2025), we're talking over $600 million. For pizza. Not entirely clear if anyone saw this coming.
Laszlo's Perspective
You might think he'd be kicking himself. Surprisingly, no. Laszlo says he doesn't regret it.
"I didn't know Bitcoin would reach this level. To me, it was amazing that I could use cryptocurrency to buy something real."
At least that's his story.
The Legacy
This pizza thing became legendary. It seems to represent a turning point.
First real commercial use of Bitcoin. Proof that crypto could jump from theory to reality. And yeah, a reminder that small choices can explode into massive consequences. Life's funny that way.
A Different Kind of Expensive Pizza
There's this Golden Pizza in Salerno now. Costs $70,000. Fancy stuff—white truffle, foie gras, fancy cheese. New York has one for $2,700. Expensive? Sure. But compared to Laszlo's pizza? Not even close.
