Evan Cheng: The Mind Behind Sui Blockchain

robot
Abstract generation in progress

Evan Cheng started Mysten Labs and runs it now. Born in Taiwan—Kaohsiung specifically—he later made his way to America. Smart guy. Really smart.

At Apple, he spent about ten years. Did some impressive work there. Helped build this thing called LLVM—kind of a big deal for macOS and iOS development tools. Got an award in 2012. Pretty fancy.

Then Meta grabbed him. Was Facebook back then. Led their Novi Research team, playing with blockchain stuff. Seemed like he found his passion there.

In 2021, he jumped ship. Took four buddies from Novi with him. Mysten Labs was born. Their baby? The Sui blockchain.

Cheng's got this thing about existing blockchains. Not fast enough. Not scalable enough. Ethereum? Too sluggish, he thinks. His vision feels bold—"true freedom on-chain" is what he calls it.

It's not entirely clear how exactly they'll pull it off, but Cheng seems determined. Innovation matters to him. Big time.

By 2025, he's still pushing Mysten forward. Dubai conference coming up—Sui Basecamp 2025. May 1-2. Big announcements brewing. The ecosystem has grown like crazy since last year's event, or as they put it—"meteoric growth."

The name "Sui" means water in Japanese. Fitting. Cheng wants his blockchain to flow everywhere. Adapt. Support all kinds of applications.

His goal? Mainstream adoption. Security matters. Reliability too. And developers need to actually be able to use the thing.

Let's see if he makes waves.
