Safeguarding Your Digital Assets: A Guide to Transaction Review and Revocation (Day 21) #KryptoSecure

On this 21st day of #KryptoSecure, we'll delve into the crucial practice of reviewing and revoking transaction approvals in your cryptocurrency wallet.

Reviewing involves scrutinizing transactions to make informed decisions or alterations. Revocation, on the other hand, means withdrawing a previously granted approval, preventing decentralized applications (dApps) from accessing or transferring your wallet's contents.

By consistently revoking active approvals, you minimize the risk of falling victim to approval-based exploits. However, it's important to note that this process cannot recover funds that have already been stolen.

It's crucial to understand the distinction between disconnecting and revoking. While disconnecting from a dApp merely terminates the auto-login status of your wallet, it doesn't nullify the dApp's authorization.

Once a dApp or website gains unlimited access rights to a token in your wallet, they retain the ability to utilize all those tokens, even if you've withdrawn your funds from their platform back to your wallet. This leaves you vulnerable to malicious actors who could potentially access and withdraw your funds to their own wallets, leaving you with no recourse for recovery.

Why Transaction Review and Revocation Matter

  1. After approving a transaction on a potentially suspicious website or dApp.

  2. When your funds have been compromised, but you're certain your private key remains secure.

  3. Following the approval of unlimited spending for a specific token or NFT in your wallet.

  4. As a preventive measure, it's advisable to periodically review your transactions and revoke any that appear suspicious.

Steps to Revoke Smart Contract Access to Your Digital Assets

Step 1: Utilize Revocation Tools

Several platforms allow you to view and revoke smart contracts linked to your address. Visit one of these websites and connect your wallet:

  • Gate's Security Center (supports multiple networks)
  • Revoke.cash (supports multiple networks)
  • Cointool (supports multiple networks)
  • Unrekt (supports multiple networks)
  • EverRevoke (supports multiple networks)

Step 2: Link Your Wallet

Upon accessing the chosen website, select "Connect wallet". You should receive a prompt to link your wallet.

Ensure that you're using the same network in both your wallet and on the website. You'll only see smart contracts related to the selected network. For instance, if you connect to Ethereum Mainnet, you'll only view Ethereum contracts, not those from other chains like Polygon.

Step 3: Choose the Smart Contract to Revoke

You'll see a list of contracts that have been granted access to your tokens, along with their spending limits. Identify the one you wish to terminate.

If you're unsure which contract to choose, you can revoke all of them. This won't cause any issues, but you'll need to grant new permissions the next time you interact with any of these contracts.

Step 4: Revoke Access to Your Funds

After clicking "revoke", you should see a new transaction suggestion in your wallet. This is normal. You'll need to pay a fee for the cancellation to be processed successfully. Depending on the network, this can take anywhere from a minute to several minutes.

It's recommended to refresh the revocation site after a few minutes and reconnect your wallet to confirm that the revoked contract has been removed from the list.

As a best practice, never grant projects unlimited access to your tokens and regularly revoke all token allowance access.

Revoking token access should not result in any loss of funds, especially when using the tools mentioned above.

However, it's always prudent to conduct your own research before using any tool. While I have personally used Gate's Security Center and Revoke.cash multiple times, the decision to use any tool should be at your discretion.
