(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump openly challenged the nation’s highest court Tuesday, dismissing a landmark Supreme Court ruling that struck down his sweeping global tariffs as he delivered his State of the Union address.

Trump described the decision as deeply unwelcome, calling the ruling very unfortunate, while making clear he had no intention of backing down from his aggressive trade agenda.

Warning foreign governments against complacency, Trump declared that U.S. trading partners “want to keep the deal that they already made … Knowing that the legal power that I as president have to make a new deal could be far worse for them.”

The defiant remarks came just days after the U.S. Supreme Court delivered a significant constitutional blow to Trump’s trade policy.
