Turkish Stock Exchange Closes Wednesday Down

(MENAFN) Turkey’s benchmark equity index retreated sharply on Wednesday, closing at 13,809.88 points as selling pressure dominated the session throughout the day.

The BIST 100 opened at 14,049.62 before shedding 240.95 points from Tuesday’s close, touching an intraday low of 13,752.78. The session’s peak reached 14,068.32, recorded early in the day before the decline took hold.

Losses were broad-based, with 80 sub-indexes finishing in negative territory against just 19 that managed to close higher. Daily trading volume reached 175.6 billion Turkish liras — equivalent to approximately $4 billion — while the index’s total market valuation stood at 13.68 trillion liras, or roughly $312.6 billion.

On the currency front, the USD/TRY pair traded at 43.8710 as of 6:20 p.m. local time (1520 GMT). The euro changed hands at 51.7720 liras, while the British pound was valued at 59.3955 liras.

In commodities, gold climbed to $5,187.85 per ounce, while Brent crude traded at $70.75 per barrel.
