Xiaomi Group Founder, Chairman, and CEO Lei Jun held a live broadcast on the evening of February 27 at Xiaomi’s automotive factory with several Xiaomi safety experts. During the broadcast, Xiaomi safety experts stated that during accident investigations, automakers are generally not allowed to access the vehicles. As the party under investigation, they must truthfully provide information, and regulators also do not permit companies to interfere with the investigation. If the automaker does not have approval from regulatory authorities, they are generally not allowed to disclose related accident information on their own.
Last year, the traffic accident involving Xiaomi SU7 Ultra on Chengdu Tianfu Avenue continued to attract attention. “After a traffic or fire accident occurs, traffic police and fire departments first seal off the scene and secure the vehicle. Then they retrieve various data and information. After on-site investigation, experts are convened for analysis and judgment. Some accidents require identification experiments before technical conclusions can be drawn. This is not a quick process and takes some time,” said Xiaomi safety experts.
On the same day, Xiaomi Automotive announced a five-layer safety system, specifically including a human-centered approach, safety assistance priority, passive safety redundancy, rapid emergency response, and assisted driving.
“Assisted driving cannot replace human driving. We hope car owners stay focused while driving and control the vehicle promptly when necessary,” Lei Jun said during the live broadcast.
Xiaomi stated that in the new year, it will rebuild the Xiaomi Automotive Safety Advisory Committee and invite vehicle safety experts from major universities, research institutes across the country, and those who have participated in national investigations and recalls to evaluate and oversee Xiaomi’s vehicle safety from multiple perspectives.
Additionally, Xiaomi Automotive also hopes to establish a public safety communication mechanism, regularly communicating with car owners, media, and experts to provide suggestions for Xiaomi vehicle safety. An event is expected to be held in the first half of this year.
During the live broadcast, when discussing why Xiaomi Automotive is developing its own battery packs, Lei Jun said, “When we started making cars five years ago, we made up our mind to do a good job with the batteries. We assembled a large and highly capable battery R&D team and built a battery pack factory, deeply involved in the manufacturing of battery packs. We hope Xiaomi’s battery factory can become a benchmark and lighthouse factory in the battery manufacturing field, replicating advanced battery manufacturing capabilities across the entire industry chain and improving the systemic capacity of the entire supply chain.”
