Vitalik proposes optimizing the Ethereum finality mechanism: replacing Casper FFG with Minimmit
Odaily Planet Daily reports that Vitalik Buterin posted on X stating that in the discussion of Ethereum’s consensus mechanism, there is a proposal to replace the current finality component Casper FFG with a new one called Minimmit. He believes that Casper FFG uses a two-round finality mechanism (validators need two signatures to complete “proof” and “final confirmation”), while Minimmit only requires one signature to achieve finality. As a trade-off, Minimmit’s fault tolerance threshold will be reduced from 33% in Casper FFG to about 17%. Although the fault tolerance is lower, Minimmit is more likely to allow the network to enter a “multi-chain competition rather than incorrect final confirmation” state under various attack or client vulnerability scenarios. This situation is easier for the community to coordinate and recover. He thinks that it is safer and more recoverable if finality does not occur in a short period rather than incorrect blocks being finalized. Therefore, he considers that Minimmit may be better overall in terms of security trade-offs.
