Why language models are unable to understand reality: from Plato's cave to global models
Language models create the impression of knowledgeable systems through fluency and confident judgments. But speaking fluently doesn’t mean understanding, and expressing convincingly doesn’t mean perceiving reality. To understand the fundamental limitations of modern AI, it’s helpful to turn to a philosophical idea that has been around for over two thousand years. Plato described humans in a cave, chained so that they only see shadows on the wall. This image perfectly reflects the state of large language models.
Limitation of Language Models: Text Instead of Real Experience
Language models do not see the world directly. They do not hear sounds, feel textures, or interact with objects. All their knowledge is built on text data: books, articles, posts, comments, speech transcriptions — a vast archive of human self-expression from history and the internet. Text is their only channel for obtaining information.
What do language models know about the world? Only what they have received through the filter of human language. And human language is imperfect: it reflects not reality itself but our perceptions of it — often incomplete, biased, and distorted. People describe the world through the lens of their beliefs, ignorance, cultural blind spots, and outright lies. The internet is full of brilliant ideas, but also conspiracy theories, propaganda, and fiction.
When we train language models on texts, we do not give them access to reality. We only provide its reflection — shadows on Plato’s wall. This is not just a flaw that can be corrected; it is a fundamental architectural defect.
Why Scaling Up Doesn’t Solve the Core Problem
For a long time, the development strategy in AI was based on the belief: scale fixes everything. More data, more powerful models, more parameters, more computing. But a large number of shadows does not transform into understanding reality. Language models are trained to predict the most statistically probable next word. They generate plausible text well, but cannot reliably determine causal relationships or predict real consequences of actions.
That’s why hallucinations are not just errors that can be fixed with an update. They are a structural property of systems built solely on language. As Yann LeCun repeatedly emphasized, a purely text-based foundation is insufficient for creating true intelligence.
Moving Toward World Models: The Architecture of the Future
Researchers and engineers are increasingly focusing on so-called world models — systems that create internal representations of the mechanics of the environment, learn through interaction, and can simulate outcomes before taking action. World models are not limited to text.
They integrate time series data, sensor streams, feedback loops, information from ERP systems, tables, and simulation results. Instead of asking “What is the most likely next word?” they solve a much more powerful problem: “What will happen if we do this?” This shift — from statistical text prediction to causal modeling — fundamentally changes the system’s capabilities.
Where World Models Are Already Used in Real Business Scenarios
For managers and analysts, this is not just a theoretical debate. World models are already appearing in areas where text analysis alone is insufficient.
Logistics and Supply Chain Management. Language models can generate a report on a disruption or describe a problem. But a world model can forecast how port closures, fuel price increases, or supplier failures will affect the entire supply network. It can test alternative scenarios before a company invests millions in a solution.
Insurance and Risk Management. Language models help explain policy terms to clients. World models study how risk evolves over time, simulate extreme situations, and assess chain losses under different scenarios — tasks beyond the capabilities of text-based systems.
Manufacturing and Operations. Digital twins of factories are early examples of world models. They do not just describe processes; they simulate interactions of machines, materials, and time parameters, allowing companies to anticipate equipment failures, optimize throughput, and test changes virtually without touching real equipment.
How Organizations Can Prepare for the Era of World Models Today
Discussing the shift from text-based systems to world models raises a practical question for organizations: how to start preparing for this change today?
The challenge is that while world models are still developing in labs and specialized applications, understanding their principles requires experimenting with current available systems. You cannot build the future without understanding the present.
Experiment with different AI approaches — from language models to more complex architectures. Use accessible tools to test hypotheses. Don’t rely on a single source of information — be flexible and willing to explore. This will help your organization understand the mechanics of the changes already underway.
From Language Models to Hybrid Architectures of Tomorrow
This is not a call to abandon language models. It’s about rethinking their role within a larger system.
In the near future, AI architecture will look like this:
Language models will become interfaces — helpers and translators between humans and systems. World models will provide “grounding” — understanding how the world actually works, with the ability to forecast and plan. Language will sit on top of these systems, which learn from reality itself, not just its descriptions.
In Plato’s allegory, prisoners are freed not by more careful study of shadows. They are freed when they turn around, see the source of the shadows, and finally exit the cave into the real world.
AI is approaching a similar moment. Organizations that recognize this early will stop mistaking convincing speech for genuine understanding. They will begin investing in systems that model their own reality — in world models. These companies will create not just AI that speaks beautifully about the world, but AI that truly understands how the world works.
