This weekend, Mexico City prepares to face adverse weather conditions. Authorities have activated alert protocols in the 16 boroughs due to expected strong winds impacting the region. According to the Mexico City Secretariat of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection, the weather event will pose significant risks to the population and urban infrastructure.

Strong gusts: what to expect from the strong winds this Saturday

The strong wind conditions will mainly occur in the late afternoon and nighttime hours. Forecasts indicate gusts could reach speeds over 59 kilometers per hour, which presents considerable dangers. The alert will remain in effect from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

Likely consequences include falling branches and trees in public spaces, detachment of billboards and various objects scattered on roads and streets. Damage to private homes and urban furniture installed in the city is also expected. Civil Protection recommends residents secure or store any objects that could be displaced by the wind, avoid work at heights such as scaffolding, rooftops, or cornices, and use appropriate facial protection.

Sub-zero temperatures in southern boroughs: necessary precautions

In addition to the intense winds, Mexico City will experience a significant drop in temperatures during Saturday night and early Sunday morning. Six boroughs have been placed on yellow alert for low temperatures, with records potentially dropping between 4 and 6 degrees Celsius. The areas included in this alert are Álvaro Obregón, Cuajimalpa, Magdalena Contreras, Tlalpan, and Xochimilco.

The weather situation adds to previous concerns about air quality in the region. Just a week ago, an environmental contingency was suspended and then reactivated due to high ozone levels in the Valley of Mexico and its Metropolitan Zone. Currently, Mexico City shows acceptable pollution levels, although several municipalities in the State of Mexico exhibit deteriorated air quality.

The Atmospheric Monitoring System has warned that strong winds will generate an additional adverse effect: gusts of up to 30 kilometers per hour will resuspend settled dust particles, increasing PM10 concentrations in the atmosphere. This phenomenon could quickly change the air quality from tolerable to poor or critical, with visible shifts to gray or brown hues in the city’s sky.
