Australia’s Queensland recently experienced continuous heavy rains, triggering severe flooding, causing hundreds of homes to be submerged, roads to be closed, and schools to suspend classes. Many areas have entered a state of emergency. Two Chinese backpackers driving through flood-affected areas unfortunately lost their lives; the cause of the accident is under investigation.

The two backpackers departed from Brisbane, planning to work on farms in the North Burnett region. Their last contact with the outside world was on the evening of March 8, with their mobile signal last located in Kilkivan. The silver four-wheel-drive vehicle they were driving was swept away and sank in the floodwaters. At the time, the area was under flood warning due to ongoing heavy rains, but they may not have received real-time information promptly or underestimated the flood risk.

Queensland police and emergency rescue teams deployed helicopters for large-scale search and rescue operations. On the afternoon of March 11, rescuers found the involved vehicle in the Kilkivan flood area, and later discovered two bodies inside the vehicle, confirmed to be the missing persons. Police have dispatched divers and forensic experts to conduct formal identification.

The two deceased are a 26-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman, both Chinese backpackers traveling in Australia and preparing to work on farms. The police have contacted their families, and the investigation is ongoing.

Australia is currently in the flood season, and incidents involving water crossings are frequent. Police and local officials have repeatedly issued warnings: “Do not risk crossing roads with water on them.”
