Surging Fuel Prices Impact Eurozone Household Consumption

ING economists in the Netherlands point out that tensions in the Middle East and disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz have led to rising fuel prices worldwide, with households in the Eurozone being hit the hardest. The surge in fuel prices has put pressure on many Eurozone families, comparable to the energy crisis of 2022. European consumers are currently experiencing significant stress at the gas stations, with the average price of unleaded gasoline per tank increasing by about €4.5 in Italy and up to €13 in Germany compared to one week before the US and Israel launched military strikes against Iran. The increase in diesel prices is even more pronounced, with Italy seeing an increase of about €8.4 and Germany up by €21.5. Due to the rapidly changing situation, global economic forecasting agencies find it difficult to determine how long the Middle East conflict will last and how long the disruption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz will continue.
