Iran and Pakistan High-Level Consecutive Talks Emphasize Easing Regional Tensions Through Diplomacy
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Iranian media reported on the 23rd that Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi spoke with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Both emphasized the urgent need to de-escalate the Persian Gulf situation and engage in diplomatic mediation. The report said that Sharif stated he discussed the tense situation in the Persian Gulf with Raisi, and both agreed on the importance of easing tensions, initiating dialogue, and diplomatic efforts. He also stressed the importance of unity within the Islamic world and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to playing a constructive role in promoting regional peace.
On the same day, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on social media that Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian to exchange views on regional developments. Bhutto emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomatic means in promoting peace, security, and stability in the region and beyond. Both sides agreed to stay in contact regarding regional issues.
Earlier that day, Axios reported that officials from several countries are trying to coordinate a meeting in Islamabad, Pakistan, involving Iran’s parliamentary speaker Ali Larijani, U.S. Special Envoy for Iran Brian Wintrop, Jared Kushner, and Vice President Kamala Harris, possibly later this week.
