Citi Brushes Off the Bearish Noise
Following his latest assessment, Bazinet maintained his Buy rating on NYT stock and lifted his price target by 22%, from $77 to $94, implying about 14% upside. The analyst gave the bullish rating despite pointing to critics’ arguments about missed key performance indicators and elevated multiples — that is, investors paying more per unit for fundamentals such as earnings and sales.
Apart from being a five-star-rated analyst, Bazinet ranks 371 out of the more than 12,000 analysts tracked by TipRanks. He boasts a 58% success rate and an average return of 14.70%.
Other Reasons Citi Is Bullish on the New York Times
Criticism about the New York Times’ fundamentals comes despite the media giant surpassing Wall Street expectations in its fourth-quarter fiscal 2025 results released last month.
Its sales during the period rose 10.4% year-over-year to $802.3 million, even as total advertising revenues climbed by 16.1% to $191.7 million. The media company also added 780,000 subscribers during the quarter and 1.4 million digital subscribers during the year to reach 12.21 million.
Apart from the New York Times’ successful push toward a digital audience, Bazinet also pointed to the newspaper’s improving advertising revenue for his rating. The analyst also sees room for consensus estimates on NYT stock to rise and for return on invested capital to improve.
Is NYT Stock a Buy?
While Citi is bullish on the New York Times’ shares, analysts across Wall Street remain divided. They currently have a Moderate Buy consensus rating on NYT based on three Buys and three Holds assigned over the past three months.
Moreover, the average NYT price target of $72.33 implies about 13% downside risk from current trading levels.
