Just saw some pretty heavy news about Faruk in Turkey, the founder of Thodex who died in prison after receiving a 196-year sentence, one of the biggest fraud cases in crypto history.

His story is quite brutal. Thodex was once a rapidly rising exchange, attracting over 400,000 users, with daily trading volume worth billions of dollars. It seems to be a success story of a young Turkish entrepreneur building something big. The crypto world loves stories like this.

However, $2.6 billion in deposits went missing. Faruk fled to Albania, was arrested in 2022, and extradited in 2023. He was sentenced to 196 years in prison per count, with no early release.

What’s interesting is that he denied any intent to commit fraud, claiming he was a visionary who failed because the laws were unclear. That’s one of the common excuses we hear. But in Faruk’s case, it didn’t help at all.

His death in prison marks the end of a chapter in Turkey’s dark history of crypto. It reflects how blurry the line is between innovation and crime in the crypto world, and when the scales tip the wrong way, the consequences can be truly severe.
