UK authorities have arrested a teenager linked to the cryptocurrency extortion gang Scattered Spider, which has stolen over 115 million USD from more than 100 organizations. Police traced the suspect through the trail of gift card transactions from an e-wallet on the same server containing the ransom money. This group started with SIM swapping, social engineering scams, and then moved on to ransomware attacks, operating since 2022 and previously targeting large casinos in Las Vegas.

Two members, Thalha Jubair (19 years old) and Owen Flowers (18 years old), appeared in court in the UK last week for the 2024 attack. Jubair is also facing charges in the US for conducting 120 intrusions, including into the federal court system. The FBI seized 36 million USD in cryptocurrency from wallets he controlled. The companies that were attacked had to pay approximately 89.5 million USD in ransom.
