Abstract generation in progress

The Neo blockchain team has announced that the Neo Legacy network will officially shut down on October 31. In effect, this marks the end of an important chapter for the blockchain that started as AntShares back in 2016. Therefore, the team is now urging all users and developers to migrate their assets and smart contracts to Neo N3. Before the deadline to avoid permanent loss.

Final Call for Migration

In its final reminder on X, Neo emphasized that any NEO, GAS or NEP-5 assets left on Neo Legacy’s MainNet or TestNet. After October 31 will be permanently inaccessible. Users are encouraged to use the official migration portals migration.neo.org for NEO and GAS and nepmigration.com for other tokens. Neo also warned users to avoid unverified third-party websites to prevent asset loss

Developers who still have smart contracts running on the old chain. They are advised to reach out via the Neo Discord for migration support. The shutdown follows a multi year transition to Neo N3, which launched in mid-2021. The newer version introduced advanced features, improved scalability and better developer tools. Neo says it’s time to focus all efforts on the future, leaving the legacy chain behind.

A Legacy of Innovation

The Neo Legacy Network has had a remarkable run. Over the past eight years, it has produced more than 14 million blocks. That supported over 213 types of assets and processed 281 million transactions. Nearly 3 million addresses were created on the network. It formed the backbone of Neo’s early developer community.

For many, Neo Legacy was where they launched their first smart contracts and dApps. It became a testing ground for ideas that helped shape the evolution of the Neo ecosystem. “It’s never easy to say goodbye,” the Neo team said in their announcement. Thanking the community for its years of support.

Preserving History

Before shutting down, the team will take a final network snapshot to preserve key data. This snapshot will serve as an archive of Neo Legacy’s history. Thereby keeping its contributions to blockchain development intact. However, after the shutdown, block production will stop permanently. Consequently, no more transactions, migrations or smart contract deployments will be possible. Consensus node operators will also need to shut down their nodes once the process is complete.

A New Era with Neo N3

Neo’s focus now shifts entirely to Neo N3 and the upcoming Neo X, the next phase of its blockchain ecosystem. In short, the N3 network offers enhanced performance, lower fees and stronger cross-chain functionality. Consequently, the team says this transition will allow them to “concentrate our strength on the main engines.” With over eight years of progress behind it. Therefore, Neo is ready to move forward. It’s inviting its entire community to embrace the future together on Neo N3.
