According to CaiLian, a study published October 10 in the journal Joule suggests that artificial intelligence (AI) may have a greater environmental impact than previously thought. The study found that AI ends up consuming as much energy each year as countries like the Netherlands and Sweden, if not more, potentially undermining global efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Research firm SemiAnalysis says OpenAI needs 3,617 NVIDIA's HGX A100 servers and a total of 28,936 graphics processing units (GPUs) to support ChatGPT, which means 564 megawatt-hours of energy per day, which is much higher than the energy demand during the training phase.
