An American tourist in London lost over $123,000 in Crypto Assets after mistakenly taking a fake Uber.
On May 21, reported by Decrypt, an American tourist lost over $123,000 in crypto assets in a suspected premeditated theft in London’s West End after a brief stay in the city and a night out. Jacob Irwin-Cline from Portland, Oregon, called an Uber around 1:30 AM on May 9 after leaving the nightclub The Roxy in Soho, where he was on a two-day layover. Police stated that a driver learned his name from the app and intercepted him at the scene. Irwin-Cline then requested to view the nightclub’s CCTV footage, which showed him getting into a dark sedan, rather than the Toyota Prius shown on his Uber app. The driver then handed him a cigarette, which was believed to contain a sedative. Under the influence of the drug, Irwin-Cline inadvertently revealed the unlock password to his phone, allowing the individual access to his crypto account, after which he was abandoned in an unfamiliar area of London. Police later confirmed that the attacker forcibly logged into his Revolut account and directly accessed his Wallet.
