Is 3M (MMM) Offering Value After Recent PFAS Litigation Focus And Mixed Share Performance ========================================================================================= Simply Wall St Thu, February 19, 2026 at 2:12 PM GMT+9 6 min read In this article: MMM -2.06% Never miss an important update on your stock portfolio and cut through the noise. Over 7 million investors trust Simply Wall St to stay informed where it matters for FREE. * If you are wondering whether 3M is fairly priced or offering value right now, this article will walk through what the numbers are really saying about the stock. * 3M last closed at US$164.17, with returns of 1.5% year to date and 11.3% over the past year, set against shorter term moves of a 5.0% decline over 7 days and a 2.2% decline over 30 days. * Recent headlines around 3M have focused on the company and its long standing role in industrials and consumer products, alongside ongoing attention on its legal and operational footprint. This mix of interest helps frame how investors are reacting to the stock's current price levels. * Simply Wall St currently gives 3M a valuation score of 4 out of 6, based on how often it screens as undervalued across several checks. Next, we will unpack what different valuation methods say about that number and point you to a more complete way to think about 3M's value at the end of the article. Find out why 3M's 11.3% return over the last year is lagging behind its peers. ### Approach 1: 3M Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) Analysis A DCF model projects a company’s future cash flows and then discounts those projections back to today’s dollars to estimate what the business might be worth right now. It focuses on cash, not accounting earnings, which is why many investors like it for long term valuation work. For 3M, the model used is a 2 Stage Free Cash Flow to Equity approach. The latest twelve month free cash flow is reported at $1,058.82m. Analysts provide explicit free cash flow estimates for several years, and Simply Wall St then extends those projections further out. By 2030, free cash flow is projected at $5,164m, with a series of annual forecasts and extrapolated figures in between, all expressed in $ and discounted back to today using the model’s assumptions. Putting those cash flows together, the DCF output points to an estimated intrinsic value of about $221.52 per share for 3M. Against the recent share price of $164.17, this implies the stock is about 25.9% undervalued on this metric. **Result: UNDERVALUED** Our Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis suggests 3M is undervalued by 25.9%. Track this in your watchlist or portfolio, or discover 53 more high quality undervalued stocks. MMM Discounted Cash Flow as at Feb 2026 Head to the Valuation section of our Company Report for more details on how we arrive at this Fair Value for 3M. ### Approach 2: 3M Price vs Earnings For a profitable company like 3M, the P/E ratio is a useful yardstick because it links what you pay per share to the earnings that the business is already generating. Investors usually accept a higher P/E when they expect stronger growth or see the earnings as relatively resilient, and a lower P/E when they see more risk or weaker prospects. Story Continues 3M currently trades on a P/E of 26.6x. That sits above the broader Industrials sector average of 13.2x, but below the peer group average of 32.9x. On its own, that indicates the market is paying more for 3M’s earnings than for the typical industrials stock, yet not as much as for some close peers. Simply Wall St’s Fair Ratio for 3M is 34.7x, which reflects a proprietary view of what a reasonable P/E could be, given factors such as earnings growth, profit margins, industry, market cap and specific risks. Because it blends these fundamentals, the Fair Ratio can be more tailored than a simple comparison with peers or the sector average. With 3M’s actual P/E of 26.6x sitting below the 34.7x Fair Ratio, this framework currently points to the shares appearing undervalued on an earnings multiple basis. **Result: UNDERVALUED** NYSE:MMM P/E Ratio as at Feb 2026 P/E ratios tell one story, but what if the real opportunity lies elsewhere? These are simple stories investors create about a company like 3M that connect their view of its future revenue, earnings and margins to a financial forecast and a fair value estimate. All of this happens within the Narratives tool on Simply Wall St’s Community page that is used by millions of investors. There you can see how people with different views look at the same stock, compare their fair value to the current price to decide whether they see 3M as offering opportunity or risk, and watch those Narratives update automatically when new information such as earnings, PFAS litigation news or product announcements comes through. For example, a bullish user might anchor on a fair value around US$223, while a more cautious one might be closer to about US$126 or even the lower analyst price targets near US$101. Yet both are using the same structure to link their story, forecast and valuation. For 3M however, we will make it really easy for you with previews of two leading 3M Narratives: **🐂 3M Bull Case** Fair value in this bullish narrative: US$177.32 per share Implied discount to this fair value at US$164.17: about 7.4% undervalued Revenue growth assumption: 2.24% per year * Analysts in this camp are leaning on steady revenue growth, higher profit margins and declining share count to support their fair value around US$177. * They see progress on product launches, operational efficiency and pricing as important supports for earnings and for handling PFAS and other legal obligations over time. * In their view, the current price sits reasonably close to their updated target, so the stock looks roughly in line with what their models describe as fair value. **🐻 3M Bear Case** Fair value in this bearish narrative: US$125.70 per share Implied premium to this fair value at US$164.17: about 30.8% overvalued Revenue growth assumption: 1.16% per year * The bearish narrative leans on a lower fair value of about US$126, built around a more cautious view on revenue, litigation costs and what P/E multiple investors might pay in future. * It emphasizes ongoing PFAS exposure, restructuring execution and regulatory pressure as potential drags on free cash flow and margins, even if earnings still rise in absolute terms. * From this angle, today’s share price looks well above what these assumptions support, so the focus is on whether expectations and valuation might eventually compress.
