Western powers will push the IAEA to declare Iran's violation of its nuclear non-proliferation obligations in fear of angering Tehran
On May 31, diplomats said that Western powers are preparing to urge the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) at their next quarterly meeting to declare that Iran has violated its nuclear non-proliferation obligations for nearly 20 years, a move that is bound to anger Tehran. The move could further complicate nuclear negotiations between the United States and Iran. The United States and its European allies, the United Kingdom, France and Germany (E3), have introduced resolutions adopted in the past by the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which are made up of the 35 member states of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), calling on Iran to take swift measures, such as explaining uranium traces found by the IAEA at undeclared sites. The IAEA is preparing to submit its quarterly report on Iran to Member States before the next Board of Governors meeting on 9 June. One of them would be a longer comprehensive description of the issues, including Iranian cooperation, which was called for in the November resolution, and which diplomats expected to be a scathing report.
