Trump thanks Iran for the meticulously planned attack to ease tensions.
According to Gate News bot, oil prices continued their big dump after U.S. President Trump announced a ceasefire, as reported by Bloomberg. Previously, in a social media post following actions in Iran, Trump thanked the Islamic Republic of Iran for “notifying us in advance” and encouraged Iran and its main regional enemy, Israel, to pursue “peace and harmony.” This is different from earlier, when Trump threatened to respond to any retaliation with force “greater” than the U.S. strikes on nuclear facilities.
An official familiar with Western intelligence assessments stated that Iran’s actions on Monday are a typical example of “escalation by ramping up exports.” However, the official warned that it is more difficult to understand whether Israel will — and when — cease its military activities in the region.
Before the escalation of tensions this month, U.S. and Iranian negotiating representatives had held multiple rounds of talks aimed at reaching a new agreement to limit Iran’s nuclear program, to replace the 2015 agreement that Trump abandoned during his first term.
After that, Trump occasionally issued military threats while hinting at a resumption of diplomacy. According to CNN reports on Monday, Trump’s previously negotiated envoy, Steve Witkoff, has been in contact with Iran since the attack by the United States. Tehran has indicated that it will not return to negotiations during the period of being attacked.
Iran launched short-range and medium-range ballistic missiles on Monday, targeting the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, which officials said has been largely evacuated.
The Supreme National Security Council of Iran stated that the number of missiles launched this time is comparable to the number of bombs dropped by the United States on the Islamic Republic of Iran a few days ago, and this attack “will not pose a danger to Qatar”; Iran describes Qatar as “our friendly brother country.”
Bloomberg’s chief emerging markets economist Ziad Daoud stated that Iran’s retaliatory actions are “largely symbolic.” “Iran has issued many warnings - Qatar has closed its airspace, and the United States has also issued warnings to its citizens.”
