Telegram provided information of over 2,000 users to the US authorities in 2024
ChainCatcher news, according to Protos, Telegram has significantly increased its compliance with data requests and provided detailed information on over 2,000 users to US authorities in 2024. According to a report by 404 Media, Telegram complied with 14 requests from the United States between January 1 and September 30, 2024, involving ‘IP addresses and/or phone numbers’, affecting a total of 108 users. However, for the remaining time in 2024, Telegram continued to comply with 900 requests from the United States, involving a total of 2,253 users. Shortly after Durov’s arrest, Telegram updated its privacy policy, explicitly stating that it will provide IP addresses and phone numbers to authorities based on valid legal orders. Previously, Telegram had stated that it would only provide this information when requested in connection with potential terrorist activities. Telegram has long been considered the preferred communication method for criminal networks, especially in Southeast Asia, where criminals use it to launder money, trade stolen data, and obtain fraud tools.
